In today’s hectic digital age, many of us spend a significant portion of our day staring at computer screens and other digital devices, especially at work. As a writer, I don’t even want to think about my daily screen time. This prolonged screen use can lead to eye strain, discomfort, and other vision-related issues. In order to combat this and help keep our eyes in tip top shape here are some practical tips to help you maintain your eye health at work and ensure your vision remains clear and comfortable.
1. Maintain an Optimal Distance from Screens
Tip: Keep your computer screen at least an arm’s length away.
Sitting too close to your screen can cause significant eye strain. I know I can often be found with my nose in a screen from time to time and I don’t even know that I am doing it. To reduce this stress, position your screen so that it is about an arm’s length (30 inches) away from your eyes. Ensure that the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level to maintain a natural viewing angle.
2. Adjust Screen Brightness and Contrast
Tip: Match your screen brightness to your surroundings.
High screen brightness can exacerbate eye fatigue, especially in low-light conditions. I am very guilty of having my phone light shine at me at night from bed so I have learned to adjust the monitor’s brightness to a level that is comfortable for my eyes and matches the ambient light for my location. Also, increasing the contrast to make text easier to read without straining is also a useful tip I’ve learned about.

3. Implement the 45/20/20 Rule
Tip: Every 45 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
To prevent eye strain, I’ve started to take regular breaks using the 45/20/20 rule. Every 45 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This simple exercise helps relax the eye muscles and refresh your vision, reducing the risk of headaches and discomfort. I’ve certainly noticed an improvement of eye strain since doing this!
4. Reduce Blue Light Exposure
Tip: Use blue light filters or glasses to minimize exposure.
Blue light from screens can cause eye strain and interfere with your sleep. As someone who finds it hard to get shut eye at the best of times it’s certainly become something I am concerned about. Many devices offer built-in blue light filters that can be activated in the settings. Alternatively, consider using blue light blocking glasses to protect your eyes without affecting screen clarity.
5. Ensure Proper Lighting
Tip: Use proper lighting to reduce glare and eye strain.
Poor lighting conditions can contribute to eye strain. Ensure your workspace is well-lit with natural or artificial light. Position your light source to reduce glare on your screen. If necessary, use an anti-glare screen protector to minimize reflections.
6. Maintain Good Posture
Tip: Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor and your screen at eye level.
Good posture is essential for overall health, including your eyes. Which is worrying as I have awful posture. They recommend that when working make sure to sit upright with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and your screen at eye level. This position helps reduce strain on your neck, shoulders, and eyes, promoting a more comfortable and efficient workspace.
7. Stay Hydrated
Tip: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Dehydration can lead to dry, irritated eyes. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and eyes well-hydrated. Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily to maintain optimal hydration or get a water bottle with a design that you like to encourage to drink more water (just try not to forget where you left it)

8. Eat Eye-Healthy Foods
Tip: Incorporate leafy greens, carrots, and omega-3 rich foods into your diet.
A diet rich in essential nutrients supports eye health. Include leafy greens like spinach and kale, carrots, and foods high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon in your meals. These foods provide vitamins and antioxidants that help protect your eyes and maintain good vision and can also help with keeping your brain active as you go about your work day.
9. Use Lubricating Eye Drops
Tip: Keep preservative-free eye drops handy to alleviate dryness.
If you experience dry eyes, especially in air-conditioned environments such as offices, preservative-free lubricating eye drops can provide relief. Use them as needed to keep your eyes moist and comfortable throughout the workday. I like to keep some in my bag at all times especially during Hayfever season.
10. Schedule Regular Eye Exams
Tip: Visit your optometrist regularly to monitor your eye health.
In my research for this article a survey by Ocushield caught my eye which revealed that on average us Brits spend almost 2 hours on digital devices in bed each day. EEkk. This didn’t shock me as it was high but because I realized that I didn’t even want to calculate my personal hourly amount. Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining eye health and detecting any potential issues early and as we all may be guilty of neglecting our eye health it’s important to schedule routine check-ups with your optometrist to ensure your vision stays clear and to receive personalized advice on maintaining your eye health.
Conclusion
Maintaining eye health at work doesn’t have to be complicated. By making a few simple adjustments to your workspace, being aware of your actual screen time and incorporating healthy habits into your daily routine, you can protect your eyes from strain and discomfort. Implement these tips to ensure your eyes stay healthy and your vision remains clear, allowing you to work comfortably and efficiently.
